EUROPEAN PARLIAMENTARY MEETING OF CAM INTERESTS
WORKING COLLABORATIVELY ON BEHALF OF
EUROPEAN CONSUMERS TO PROTECT FREEDOM OF
CHOICE IN NATURAL HEALTHCARE
- Date: 2 March 2011
- Session 1: 12:00 - 13:00
- Session 2: 14:00 - 15:00
- Room: ASP 5G1
European legislation is becoming increasingly important in determining the range and
type of natural health products available to consumers within the EU. Certain elements
of EU law are fully harmonised, while others are only partially harmonised. The
regulatory issues of key concern are:
• Regulation of herbal products, both as traditional herbal medicinal
products and food supplements.
• Imposition of maximum (and minimum) permitted levels (MPLs) for
vitamins and minerals in food supplements (and fortified foods)
• Nutrition and health claims
• The effect of EU medicinal and novel food laws
The meeting will aim to bring MEPs up to speed with the state of play in relation to
each of these legislative areas from the standpoint of consumers, complementary and
alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners, suppliers and manufacturers, as represented
by the NGO Alliance for Natural Health International (ANH-Intl). The meeting will be
hosted by Marian Harkin MEP who has had a long-term interest in all of these issues and
has worked closely with ANH-Intl.
